New Mexico Fishing License

Lakes and streams provide fishing opportunities across Philmont's backcountry. At Fish Camp, reels, rods and trained staff facilitate fly fishing programs for thousands of participants each summer.

Do I need a fishing license?

Yes, all participants 13 and over who want to fish during their trek will need to purchase a fishing license. Adults 18 years and over must purchase a New Mexico Fishing license. Details on purchasing an adult license are listed below. Youth ages 13-17 are able to purchase a Philmont special license good for the duration of their trek. This license can be purchased at the Tooth of Time Traders in base camp

Adult Licenses for both NM residents and non-residents can be purchased for 1 day, 5 day or year long. Those wishing to fish on Philmont and from out of state will most likely want to purchase a 1 day or a 5 day. Licenses can be purchased on line through the NM Dept of Game and Fish site listed below but Philmont recommends that you purchase the license on site to insure that the day(s) you have selected to fish correspond to the correct calendar date for your itinerary.

While this is recommended, you can save a lot of time by completing a free, one-time, online registration to obtain a customer identification number (CIN). Completing this process enables staff at the Tooth of Time Traders to process a fishing license for you very quickly using your driver’s license as identification.
