Field - PASS

Philmont will be sending experienced members of the Ranger and Backcountry Departments to run pre-trek instructional courses around the country. These one day, 8-hour courses will take place on Saturdays or Sundays and will mostly be held at scout offices in regions with a high concentration of registered Philmont participants.

Field-PASS participants will enjoy an instructional introduction to Philmont and achieve a thorough understanding of the following:

  • Philmont-issued gear
  • Crew leadership positions
  • Preparing youth leaders prior to your trek
  • Physical conditioning
  • Travel to and from Philmont
  • Conducting a shakedown hike
  • Establishing a crew Philmont committee
  • Setting up a campsite like you would in Philmont's backcountry
  • Smellables
  • Bear bag hanging
  • Dining fly and tent setup
  • Gas stove operation and care
  • Philmont’s backcountry cooking method
  • Dish washing and sanitation
  • Sump use

WHAT TO EXPECT

Field-PASS courses will begin at 9:00am and usually take place in council scout offices. Experienced members from the Ranger and Backcountry Departments will lead you in the backcountry and logistical fundamentals of Philmont over the course of the day. Participants will enjoy a trail lunch and dinner in between training sessions. At the conclusion of the course, advisors will receive PASS materials to share with crew members. Courses end around 5:00pm.

WHO IS INVITED?

All adult advisors – whether registered for a trek, trek, or just generally interested in learning more about Philmont – are invited to attend a Field-PASS course.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

The cost to attend is and covers a Philmont-style trail meal lunch, dinner, and PASS materials including the PASS Patch.
