Building Your Crew(s)

Minimum Crew Size: 7
Maximum Crew Size: 12
Min Adults: 2
Max Adults: 4 (crew must be majority youth)
Age Requirements:

  • Troop, Varsity Team, Ship, Venturing Crew - Youth: Must be 14 or 13 and have completed the 8th grade. Participants 18-20 may participate as youth or adult crew members.
    Lead Advisor: Must be over age 21.
  • Venturing Crew - Advisors: Must all be over age 21 and there must be representative adult leadership for each youth gender.

Gender Requirements:

  • Troops & Varsity Teams: Youth must be all male. Adults may be male, female or co-ed.
  • Venturing Crews, Ships & Explorer Posts: Must have representative adult gender leadership for each participating youth gender.

Payment Requirements:

Payment for seven crew members will hold a single-crew reservation. As desired, your crew(s) may be expanded by paying for additional crew members, up to 12 members each.

Itinerary Selection

Crews hike Philmont's mountains, spending nights at various backcountry camps. At staffed camps, crews can participate in a variety of programs presented by Philmont backcountry staff.

Crews will camp in the backcountry every night of their expedition. Each itinerary includes four different kinds of camps.
